Vampire Weekend Sued

Vampire Weekend's Contra CoverVampire Weekend’s “Contra” debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts back in January of this year. They have been selling records ever since and everything has been going fine – until now. Vampire Weekend is being sued for 2 million dollars. Did they pull a Coldplay and plagiarize a song? No, but they did (well, maybe not did – we will have to see what the court thinks) use a former fashion models picture on the album cover without her consent. Ann Kirsten Kennis is the girl that looks like a doe in headlights on the Contra cover.

Kennis found out about the album cover after her daughter brought home a Vampire Weekend album and said “Hey, Mom, see your picture?”

The picture is from 1983 and Kennis claims that it is a picture her mother took and was never meant to be, or signed off to be, a modeling picture. Tod Brody, the photographer who sold the picture to Vampire Weekend for 5,000 dollars, claims that he took the picture and has had it for 26 years. So, the question is who took the the picture – the mother or Tod? Reportedly, the consent form is signed “Kirsten Johnson” in one spot and “Kirsten Johnsen” in another spot. Did Tod forge her signature or did she sign it back in 1983 and not know what she was signing?

So, what does Vampire Weekend and their label, XL Recordings, have to say about it? This statement was issued by the band:

As is standard practice, Vampire Weekend and XL Recordings licensed the rights to use the photo on the cover of Contra pursuant to a license agreement that contains representations and warranties authorizing this use of the photo. Now that a lawsuit has been filed, we look forward to having the matter resolved in court.

Well, hopefully for them, Tod took the picture because they are not going to be happy paying out 2 million dollars on top of the 5,000 dollars they already paid for the picture. While their album was number one on the album chart for like a week, or whatever, I highly doubt they have truly made that much money – well, the band anyway – and they seem awfully cocky in their response. So, what should happen? If the picture was truly used falsely, then yes, they should starting paying out. Now, whether or not they should pay 2 million dollars is a different question all together. If they didn’t use it falsely, then Kennis regained her publicity for a month and it will all be done with. Win-Win.

What Will Be the Song of the Summer?

What will be the song of the summer for 2010? Well, your vote counts and you can help determine the song for the summer of 2010! Kind of, anyway. Billboard composes a chart every year for the songs of the summer and actually has quite a collection from 1985 until today. The chart is based on actual airplay and performances on the Billboard’s “hot” charts. So, the more people that buy the songs and the more they get played on the radio (as well as some other factors) determines how well an artist and a song does on the charts.

What is the most popular song so far for 2010? Well, if you sit back and think about it for a moment, you will probably come to the conclusion that the most popular, “hot” song of the summer is “California Gurls” by Katy Perry. Don’t like Katy Perry? Unless there is some major change, you will more-than-likely have to deal with the fact that she will have the song of the summer. But, you can always go to Billboard and “Show your love for the song” or “No love for this song.”

It might make you feel better to think you actually have a part in the music industry.

Here are the current top 5 songs, in order, of the summer:
1. “California Gurls” Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dogg
2. “OMG” Usher ft. will.i.am
3. “Airplanes” B.o.B ft. Hayley Williams
4. “Billionaire” Travie McCoy ft Bruno Mars
5. “Your Love is My Drug” Ke$ha

You can check out the complete list at Billboard.com.

Top Five Albums for 2010

Lady AntebellumIt may be hard to believe, but so far, only five albums have sold more than a million copies this year. Thousands of CDs by various artist have been released in all genres and only five have been able to sell a million copies. The good news is that this time last year there was only four albums that had sold a million copies – and the numbers didn’t look as good as they do this year.

If you are an avid listener to music, it should be obvious who is the top selling artist this year – Lady Antebellum. Their album, “Need You Now,” has sold over 2.4 million copies this year. That is almost double the amount sold by any of the other four artist. Justin Bieber’s “My World 2.0″ is in second selling 1.4 million copies while Sade’s “Soldier of Love” is in third selling a little more than 1.2 million copies. Lady Gaga’s “The Fame” is in close fourth with 1.2 million copies sold. Lastly, Eminem’s “Recovery” has sold 1.1 million in just 2 weeks!

Last year at this time, both Eminem and Lady Gaga were on the list of four top selling albums. What is impressive is that Lady Gaga’s album has been out for almost two years now and is doing a lot better then most that came out this year.

Digital downloads are doing decent this year despite the fact that sells are down 1 percent compared to last year at this same time. 2010’s best selling digital song is Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister,” with 3.4 million, making it the only tune to shift more than 3 million this year.

Who will be the next artist to go platinum this year? Will there be anymore artist to sell a million copies? I’m sure, but we will have to wait and see. There are still a lot of good albums coming out in the near future.

The Best Selling Albums This Year:
Lady Antebellum – “Need You Now” 2.4 Million
Justin Bieber – “My World 2.0″ 1.4 Million
Sade – “Soldier of Love” A little over 1.2 Million
Lady Gaga – “The Fame” 1.2 Million
Eminem – “Recovery” 1.1 Million

If you are interested in any of the albums, be sure you click on the one you want and it will take you directly to Amazon where you can purchase the album. Amazon is generally cheaper than iTunes and the MP3’s will go into you iTunes account – so, theres nothing to lose and few bucks to gain!

The Pretty Reckless

Taylor Momsen, “Gossip Girl” star, has a band called the Pretty Reckless. On June 22, they are releasing a brand new EP titled “The Pretty Reckless.” The four song EP is a great. Their single, “Make Me Wanna Die,” is already available on iTunes. “Make Me Wanna Die” is a great rock song mixed with haunting violins and pounding guitar and bass riffs. Taylor’s voice is the perfect fit for the song.

Th Pretty RecklessThe second song on the album, “My Medicine,” is a pop/rock tune. It is very simple, but catchy. It has a White Stripe’s feel. The third song is called “Goin’ Down.” This one has more of a punk rock feel and is very up beat. The final song on the EP is titled “Zombie.” It is much like the other songs on the EP. “Zombie” has a very strong and powerful chorus and could be quite catchy if you listen to it too much.

Taylor Momsen’s voice and the strong rock band behind give The Pretty Reckless a great chance to make a name for themselves in the future. They will be playing the Van’s Warped Tour starting June 25th, so if you are going to be at the Warped Tour, be sure to check out the Pretty Reckless. Also, be sure to pick up the EP on June 22 on iTunes.
